JFK quoted these famous words, which are written in indelible ink on every patriotic heart…

Ask not what your guitar shop can do for you, but what you can do for your guitar shop! by Colin ‘Guitar’ Hyland

At Guitar Base we have always prided ourselves that we do things differently, and yes, we do need to sell to survive and develop, but we also get involved with tuition, work in schools, Maggie’s Charity, Weekend Warrior gigs, repairs, restringing… the list goes on and on.

And in keeping with our usual policy of not just sitting around waiting I urge you to join us at Fuzz and Guitar Base in our Autumn activities

On Friday 17th September, we are having gigs at the Old Angel, Jam Café and Lee
Rosy’s in Hockley, plus gigs at both the Britannia Club and the Boat Club in West Bridgford. Entrance will be by ticket, available from Fuzz & Guitar Base at £2.50.The gigs, featuring local bands, will preview our workshops and clinics the following day.

On Saturday 18th September from 10.00 am we are holding demos, clinics and workshops for Boss products, Tanglewood guitars, Fender guitars and amps and Blackstar amps and pedals. These will be held in venues around Fuzz on Carlton Street. You can try out gear, talk to reps and demonstrators from the companies involved – and ok, we may stretch a point and let you buy things.

The 5th of November should start with a bang, as it is not only bonfire night but also our second SUNRISER SALE! This is a staff favourite because it gives them the chance to be up at 5am for the sale at Fuzz which starts at 6am. There’s an extra 5% off if you arrive in pyjamas or nightie and prices go up as the sun goes up. Bacon sandwiches and tea are available for those who come early.

Reports of people dying of hypothermia last year were grossly exaggerated, though people did lose extremities through frostbite! It has been suggested that July would be a better time, but by people who are in the ‘Wimps Society of Great Britain’ and are not to be taken seriously.

Keep your eyes open for the mystery event at 20 to 10 on the 20th October 2010. Yes, that’s www.201020102010.co.uk. Check our websites fuzzguitars.co.uk & guitar-base.com for further details of this
event and all our other events taking place this Autumn.

Get involved! By September, our tuition in guitar, base, drums and singing will be back in full swing via our Musicademy. We also link up with Paul Hose at the Music Learning Curve in Hockley (0115 941 7493) for those of you
who work or live in town and find it easier to have tuition there. Today is a great day to start learning an instrument and get involved in music.

The big shops always win, don’t they, with their huge discounts on that new invention which starts with I and ends in t and has nterne in the middle, but we want you to get involved in music, have fun, find new friends, and develop new skills.

Come to the gigs, attend the clinics and find out more, get tuition, come and freeze to death in November at the sale and look out for our mystery events.

‘Ask what Fuzz and Guitar Base can do for you’ – you won’t be disappointed.

Weekend Warriors Gig at the Boat Club, Friday 21st May 2010

There are times when challenges occur, when people have to rely on raw talent and nervous energy. Churchill, in one of the darkest periods of our history, gave this famous quotation… “Oh yes!”

And oh yes there were nerves and tension and talent in abundance as the Weekend Warriors Roadshow, the culmination of six weeks of blood, sweat, tears and practice, reached its climax at the Nottingham Boat Club.

Nerves tingled, the crowd mingled, as one by one Rough Cut, Guinness for the Drummer, The Somethings and Wasp Factory gave their all to a rapturous full house of adoring fans who clung on to every note, every chord, every nuance, every movement in the heat of the Boat Club night!

They climbed the stairs to the stage as mere mortals in the footsteps of Hendrix, Splinter Cell and Fleetwood Mac and came down 30 minutes later as the very gods of rock themselves.

“More, more, more,” chanted the fanatical fans, but there was no more as their excited idols trod the long and winding road back in the cooling, balmy West Bridgford night air.

A night over – but never to be forgotten. A lifetime’s ambition; to be remembered for a lifetime…
